Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Source: Purchased
Pages: 288
Series: To All the Boys I've Loved Before #1
Release Date: April 15, 2014

Lara Jean's love life goes from imaginary to out of control in this heartfelt novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Summer I Turned Pretty series.

What if all the crushes you ever had found out how you felt about them... all at once?

Lara Jean Song keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren't love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she's written. One for every boy she's ever loved—five in all. When she writes, she pours out her heart and soul and says all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly, Lara Jean's love life goes from imaginary to out of control.

I really really like this book a lot. I was SO sad when it ended. But then I found out there is going to be a second book and got very excited. I mean, that ending.. You can't just end a book like that and NOT have a second book to explain! This was my first Jenny Han book and definitely won't be my last!

The concept of this book was too good. Personally if all of my love letters "accidentally" got sent out, I would be freaking out a lot more than Lara Jean did in the book! I did feel that there needed to be more about the other guys who were sent letters. The only ones we really deal with in the book are Josh and Peter. I would have liked to have seen some sort of closure with the other guys as well.

I love how important family is in this book. The relationship between the Song sisters is so amazing. There aren't a lot of families that can say that their siblings get along that well and are that close. I also liked how the dad in the book was. Sure he may have worked a lot, but you could tell that he really cared for his children and wanted to be there for them in every single way, which is how a parent should be. Reading about such a loving family was definitely very enjoyable.

Can we just talk about Kitty for a moment?! For such a little girl, she's so feisty! I love her! I'm pretty sure that she was my favorite character in the book. You do NOT mess with Kitty! And how in the world does she know how to braid hair so well?! I don't even know how to do a french braid!

I loved the relationship between Lara Jean and Peter that is develops throughout the book. Reading about them just made me want more and more. I loved how well Peter got along with Kitty. I loved how he picked up Lara Jean to take her to school. I love the little notes that he wrote her every day. I just loved them!

There was SO much hype around this book, and now I can see why. This book was such a fast and easy read. It was also super enjoyable. But I NEED THE SEQUEL NOW! I have no idea how I'm supposed to wait until 2015 for the next book to find out what happens. But if you are looking for a cute and easy read, I definitely recommend this book!

This Or That Tag

MY ANSWERS:

1. I have never listened to an audio book before. I know a lot of people that I watch on YouTube have been listening to them a lot lately and they have made me want to give them a try. However I am going to go with having the book in my hands. I like being able to go at my own pace when I am reading a book that way I know that I am fully comprehending everything that is going on within the story.

2. I don't really have a preference with this. I know that some people like one better than the other, but I like them both just the same. I guess if I HAD to pick, I would go with hardback only because paperback books tend to get messed up a lot easier than the hardbacks.

3.  Fiction, for sure. I haven't read very many non-fiction books and the ones I did read, there weren't many that I liked.

4. I'm going to have to go with fantasy would issues. Real life issues suck and that means that I have to deal with them. Haha.

5. Well to be honest, I haven't ever read either of the series. However I have seen a couple of the movies. I will have to go with Harry Potter.

6. I have an iPad that I read on and I love it.

7. It all depends really. If I am really interested in a book then I will want to buy it. If I am not so sure about a book, I think that it's best to borrow the book to see if I will like it.

8. I like to buy my books online. I am able to find more deals on books when I shop online! Plus, there aren't any good used books stores near me!

9. I usually like books that are standalones. When I read a series, I sometimes get a little bored with the characters or the story.

10. Big books scare me so I am definitely saying short and sweet.

11. I am a sucker for a good romance book. I like books with a lot of action, but I would rather read a good love story!

12. Curl up in my snuggie! (:

13. Hot chocolate all the way. I don't care what the temperature is outside or what season it is, I love me some hot chocoalte!

14. If I am questionable about a book, I will read people'e reviews. But if I really want to read the book, I do. Afterwards, I read reviews to see if people have the same thoughts and feelings as I did towards that book.

If you are reading this, I tag you!

Review: The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Publisher: Speak
Source: Purchased
Pages: 277
Series: Standalone
Release Date: June 7, 2010

Seventeen-year-old Lennie Walker, bookworm and band geek, plays second clarinet and spends her time tucked safely and happily in the shadow of her fiery older sister, Bailey. But when Bailey dies abruptly, Lennie is catapulted to center stage of her own life - and, despite her nonexistent history with boys, suddenly finds herself struggling to balance two. Toby was Bailey's boyfriend; his grief mirrors Lennie's own. Joe is the new boy in town, a transplant from Paris whose nearly magical grin is matched only by his musical talent. For Lennie, they're the sun and the moon; one boy takes her out of her sorrow, the other comforts her in it. But just like their celestial counterparts, they can't collide without the whole wide world exploding.

This remarkable debut is perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Francesca Lia Block. Just as much a celebration of love as it is a portrait of loss, Lennie's struggle to sort her own melody out of the noise around her is always honest, often hilarious, and ultimately unforgettable.

Let me start off by saying that the reason I picked up this book finally is because of Whitney at WhittyNovels talked about this book in one of her videos. (You can watch that video here.) The way she talked about it, I just KNEW I had to pick it up as soon as I could. So thank you, Whitney!

So this book is about a girl named Lennie who is struggling with the loss of her older sister Bailey. She lives with her grandmother, Gram, and her uncle, Big. This story is about her struggle with the loss of her sister as well as other things which I cannot mention because spoilers. There is also Toby, who was Bailey's boyfriend. His griefs and Lennie's are pretty much the same. Then enters the new boy, Joe. Some things go down and it causes you to feel all kinds of feels. Haha. I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil anything.

First, I want to talk about each of the characters. Lennie is such a relateable character, in my opinion. She is going through so many things that people have to deal with each day. I feel like she grows and learns so much as the story progresses. Sure she makes some mistakes, but she learns from them and does what she needs to do to fix these mistakes. I really liked her character. Gram is such a likable character. Sure, she kept some secrets from Lennie but I think it was for her own good. Gram has a big heart and really cares about Lennie and her well-being. I found Big to be a very strange character. I mean what normal person thinks they can bring back to life?! Haha. I didn't really like or dislike him as a character but I think that's only because he wasn't present a lot in the story. I really liked Toby. I thought his character had to go through a lot because of Bailey's death, but I think he handled everything very well. Joe was my favorite character in the book. I found him to be smart, funny, romantic, and an overall great guy. I think that it was really cute how he made Lennie so happy. He was able to keep her mind off the loss of her sister. When Lennie was with him, she felt no greif. Joe came into her life in a time when she really needed someone that wasn't a part of her family or wasn't her sister's boyfriend.

I thought the author did a really great job with the plot, descriptions, and the world building. There were some parts in the book that I could really picture in my head the scene and what was happening. One scene for example is when she is taking Joe to this outdoor room that is owned by a hotel not far from her house. The way everything was described, I could picture about what this scene would look like if it were real. I really enjoy when I am able to picture things authors are talking about.

One thing that I liked about this book were all the notes Lennie had written on random things. These were shown in the beginning of almost every chapter. Because of these, I feel like I was able to see more of how the relationship between Lennie and Bailey was. I also feel like it helped me connect more with Lennie and the emotions that she was dealing with.

I feel like music played a big role in this book. Music was a way that Lennie and Joe connected. I feel that music actually helped Lennie grow throughout the book. Music not only connected he with Joe but it also helped he with her grieving and it helped her grow out of Bailey's shadow and into her own spotlight.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I think I may have to add it to my favorites list. I definitely recommend giving this book a shot. Just remember that if you do read it, you will be on an emotional roller-coaster. Prepare to feel all of the feels!

Review: The Program by Suzanne Young

Publisher: Simon Pulse
Source: Borrowed from Library
Pages: 405
Series: The Program #1
Release Date: April 30, 2013

In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.

I loved this book so much. SO so much. When I first started reading it, it kind of made me angry. Being someone who fights depressed every single day, I didn't like the fact that they said that suicide was contagious. I don't think this is true AT ALL. I also feel like the struggle with depression wasn't portrayed in the right way. When you are dealing with something like this, you are going to need medication, doctors, therapy, ect. Depression isn't something where it can be fixed just by erasing the bad moments out of a persons life and memories. I'm not going to go on my rant about this whole situation, just remember that that is one aspect of this book that I did not like.

I loved the idea of this book. I think that it ties well in the world we live in today. There are so many kids now days who are getting bullied and that are dealing with depression. There are so many kids that truly believe that suicide is the answer. I think that this book really shows that things like this could one day be really bad.

The way that Young wrote this book, you feel as immediate connection with Sloane. There is no other book that is like this one. The storytelling is done so effortlessly that you are able to lose yourself in this book within minutes. Thinking about the idea of this book and The Program is really scary. Also, knowing that I suffer with depression makes things even scarier because I would be one of the people who would have to be a part of this whole epidemic.

Sloane is a really awesome character and I loved her. I felt for her all throughout the book. So many bad things are happening to her and she is trying her best to stay strong. She is a fighter, that's for sure. Her being so strong is one of the main reasons why she was such an amazing character.

Sometimes I think that some books overplay the romance. However, I loved the romance in this book. James and Sloane.. JAMES. Seriously, you can't help but love him. The way that he was portrayed, he seemed like a very likable guy with a sexy attitude. But when he was around Sloane, you could tell that he was absolutely in love.

There were parts of this book that would make me so angry, but for the most part, I needed to read more. And then the book ended.. And man oh man, that ending was crazy! I was desperate for more. I NEEDED the second book. This is a book you should really give a try. Some may not want to read it because it can be a touchy subject for some. However this book isn't just about depression and suicide, but also about hope.

Review: Dreamland by Sarah Dessen

Publisher: Speak
Source: Purchased
Pages: 250
Series: Standalone
Release Date: May 11, 2004

Wake up, Caitlin

Ever since she started going out with Rogerson Biscoe, Caitlin seems to have fallen into a semiconscious dreamland where nothing is quite real. Rogerson is different from anyone Caitlin has ever known. He's magnetic. He's compelling. He's dangerous. Being with him makes Caitlin forget about everything else--her missing sister, her withdrawn mother, her lackluster life. But what happens when being with Rogerson becomes a larger problem than being without him?

This is by far my favorite book by Sarah Dessen. This story os so heartbreaking. Actually, heartbreaking may not be a strong enough word to describe this book.

As I read this, I would literally cringe and want to cry/scream/punch things. Okay, that may be a little dramatic, but this book caused me to go through so many different emotions. It was haunting and disturbing. I feel so bad for Caitlin throughout the whole book. She feels like she will never measure up to her sister, Cass. She ends up getting tired of trying to be like her that she is lead to trouble. In this case, trouble is named Rogerson. I'm not going to say much about him because that would be a spoiler, but I will say that I HATED him SO so so much. At first, things seem to be just find between them... then things happen. (I won't mention what things because again, spoiler.) There were parts in the book where I literally wanted to shake Caitlin because I felt like she should have known better in some situations. She knows that she is on a destructive path, but she feels like she can't do anything to get herself out of it. I feel like this isn't true. I feel like you have a choice whether or not you really want to or not.

This book is one of those books that is so raw. The things that Caitlin had to deal with, I could relate to in so many ways. I unfortunately was in a situation like her before, so I felt a real connection with her and her story. Although we took different actions to help ourselves to get out, I still understand why she did certain things. I feel like Dessen did an awesome job with showing the negative effects of drugs without being too preachy. Sometimes you need to go through pain to heal, but drugs cheat you out of the opportunity. Sarah Dessen is a beast at showing how all the choices we make add up to what path we are lead to. She does this in all of her books.

There isn't a lot that I can say about this book without giving too much away. All I can say is that you should definitely give this book a read. It is one of those books that after you read it, you won't forget it.
